In 1955/56 a Scientific Survey Party from the UK undertook a lengthy expedition to Gough Island - an uninhabited island which forms part of the island group named after the main inhabited island of Tristan da Cunha (the worlds most remote inhabited island).
A special Gough Island postmark was put in to use for mail sent back by the survey party via Tristan Da Cunha together with a survey cachet mark.
Although many covers were produced for philatelic reasons, this cover appears to be genuine personal use and, unlike many covers sent back from Gough Island, this was also registered as evidenced by the scarce Tristan Da Cunha registration label (No 4,352).
Addressed to Brook Green in London, the cover bears two values 1/- and 6d from the 1954 QEII definitive issue for Tristan Da Cunha. The stamps are cancelled using the GOUGH ISLAND single ring c.d.s postmark dated 14th December 1955. A further strike of this postmark appears on the rear of the envelope.
This is a very rare cover and will be of interest to Tristan and Commonwealth collectors. There is no reserve on this auction.
