Born into a working class family in Dewsbury there was little money, but Betty grew up in a house that radiated love and warmth. In her twenties Betty began a career in politics working for the labour party. She became an MP in 1973 and was elected first woman Speaker of the House of Commons in 1992. Her unexpected retirement in October 2000 brought unprecedented tributes from a wide spectrum of people both inside and outside politics.
