Two of the most famous psychic
recordings of the 1970s stemmed from the well-documented (and controversial)
investigations into Borley Church, close to the site of Borley
Rectory - 'the most haunted house in England' and Bircham
Newton airfield, whose squash court was reputed to be haunted by
the ghosts of three RAF fliers, who died during WW II. A team of investigators,
armed with microphones and tape machines, made a series of on-site recordings
which - it is claimed - prove the existence of ghosts.
A documentary, using extracts
from their tapes appeared on a cassette, which was widely circulated
in the late seventies, and provoked a heated debate among those interested
in other-worldly matters. Public reaction ranged from praise and excitement
to skepticism and downright ridicule, but no-one who heard the tape
remained unmoved. The complete programme, which runs for just under an hour, has now been digitally restored
for optimum sound quality, and carefully remastered for this
limited-edition CD.
On The Ghost Tapes,
there is a detailed account of the sighting of the legendary Borley
Nun. You will hear inexplicable sounds taped in the dead of night which,
the producers claim, are of the restless spirit haunting the little
village church. Part two of the programme includes excerpts from a seance,
where the medium is allegedly taken over by the spirit of a dead airman,
confused and unaware that he was burned to death when his plane crashed
in flames thirty years before. There is the suggestion of a mysterious
time-slip: the remarkable sounds of of a busy wartime aerodrome, but
recorded in an empty building on the Bircham Newton site in the mid-1970s.
Over the past three decades, these mysterious
recordings have achieved almost legendary status. Whether the claims of the producers will convince the totally
skeptical is a matter of opinion, but for open-minded listeners, there is no doubt that hearing The Ghost Tapes is an engrossing, intriguing and highly thought-provoking
experience.
