Detroit's fabulous Spinners are alive and well, still touring, still performing, and still one
of the most-respected Soul vocal groups in the USA. To quote one of
their best-known songs, it's a shame - that new albums from this
fine quintet have been so criminally sparse in recent times. Their latest
album - At Their Best - was released in early 2000, but to find
their previous offering, you have to go all the way back to 1989. Recorded
for the revived Volt label, Down To Business found the
veteran group in a contemporary setting while retaining the trademark
harmonies that characterise the best of the Spinners' records.
With the Sam Cooke-inspired
lead of John Edwards well to the fore, Down To Business was (and still is) a great album. It's both classic and modern at the
same time, with some fine new songs that well complement the group's
already-impressive catalogue. For me, the standout track is the beautiful I Wanna Love You Forever, an achingly-beautiful ballad, with
harmonies to die for, climaxing with the five guys in full voice alongside
a full Gospel choir. Even after so many years, the Spinners could still
spring a stunning surprise. Now that's the mark of a great act!
Never issued in the UK, and
all but ignored in the US, this album sits very comfortably with their
Atlantic releases. US Urban Contemporary radio passed it by completely,
and the guys' superb return-to-form went virtually unnoticed. Nevertheless,
it deserves a place in the collection of any Spinners fan. (You can
bet your bottom dollar that I have a copy in mine - I've had the album
since it was a new release.) A little while ago I was offered a small
stash of mint, unplayed copies, and I didn't need telling twice! My
advice - if you missed this back then, don't miss it now - especially
as this is the very last copy I have. You know your collection deserves one
- give it a treat! :o) |
