THE CRITTERS

We love our funky Caribbean critters, and know that you do too!

But they're not just cute. They provide valuable employment and income on one of our poorest Caribbean islands, and help us to recycle waste that would otherwise end up as landfill.

Our critters are made in Haiti, one of the least developed countries in the Western Hemisphere and one of the poorest in the World.

The main industry is farming. But the country has been ravaged by natural disasters and political instability. A beautiful country, but one very different from it's more developed Caribbean neighbours.

You won't find beaches packed with 5 star hotels and tourists here!

Haitian culture is famous the world over, among the famous exports are as diverse as creole cooking and Wyclef Jean, and now Haitian arts and crafts are being noticed in the West for their bright colours and distinctive style.

Here at Indigo-Island we stock a wide range of Oil Drum Art Critters which are listed on Tazbar. These oil drums would otherwise end up as landfill and industrial waste.

The drums are cut and filled with straw and burnt, to remove any residue. Once cooled, the artist marks the shape with chalk and cuts the critter from the metal. They are then cut, hammered, painted and varnished to produce the fabulous funky critters we sell.

The majority (but not all) of our critters come from a fair trade source.
