I'm sorry. What are "kipper butties?" In fact, what are "kippers" by the way. I thought they were smoked herring or am I mistaken?
Dennis
Hi Dennis,
Yep you are correct... they are smoked herrings.
We get some really tasty Manx (Isle of Man) ones in the UK.
I always grill mine with a little butter... a 'Kipper Buttie' is just some chunks, whilst still warm, in a sandwich - you should try it... really tasty
Sounds really tasty, Sue. Actually, I've never really looked for smoked herring here. The seafood department in most of our super markets leaves much to be desired. I suppose herring is more of a cold water fish. I do like "kipper snacks" which come in little tins like sardines.
I also like deep fried catfish. Especially good with Hush Puppies. A lot depends on the seasoning in the batter though.
When I was a kid, we had fish every Friday. (I never really understood why fish isn't considered meat.) My father would take us out to this restaurant that served "Jack Salmon" on a sandwich of one slice of rye and one slice of white bread. I'm not sure exactly what species "Jack Salmon" actually is, some sort of fresh water perch maybe. I'm originally from the St Louis area and the nearest body of salt water is pretty far away.
Heavens, now I've gotten a craving for a bit of Neptune's bounty.

Now its our turn to ask what you are talking about.
Here Hush Puppies are a brand of shoe so I assume it means something different in the old USA
You beat me to it Ush... I was going to ask the same thing
Though could be a nice fillet of 'sole'....
Hush Puppies are seasoned pieces of dough which have been deep fat fried. They resemble doughnut holes in appearance and are made by dropping spoonfuls of the thick batter into the fryer like drop dumplings. They are usually highly seasoned. I believe they are traditionally a southern dish.
